White Star NewsletterNo 3
–September 2017
Dear All
We are now up to 37 members (31 August - 36) so I would like to welcome Tony Riddy. The website is obviously up and running and in future the White Star newsletter will be issued on a quarterly basis. This should enable new members to catch up with up with what has been going on.The searchI am afraid other commitments have left me with little time to search for new members this month but I will get back on the case shortly. I am attaching the “wanted” list and you will see that I have marked a number of names in green. I have managed to get, what I believe to be current addresses, and have written to them but so far with no response. If I can get a telephone number I can follow things up or if anyone knows them personally and can speak to them that would be very useful.I am trying to concentrate the search on the people from the sixties where recruitment so far has been very weak. Many of the leads that have come in so far have come from Jack Fuller’s list where he appears to have picked up a lot of additional information from the White Star magazine. I am hoping that when we have the magazines on line this will yield further clues.Steve Ashforth emailed me a copy of the 1960 and part of the 1961 White Star to enable me to research the 1960 sports teams. Interesting there was an old boys association run by Jim Vaughan. My information suggests he owned or managed the Onslow Arms in Cranleigh. The pub has since been purchased by a big chain and now renamed the Richard Onslow. I spoke to a very helpful lady there but the trail has gone cold. Can anybody add anything?
The WebsiteFor you all but especially the new members a reminder of the website access:http://hillsideschool.org.uk/site/index.php?page=news&type=view&id=andrewhs-blog%2Fhistory-1951-1969Martin has put an enormous effort into creating the web site so I would urge you to support him by signing on if you have not already done so. For all you struggling recycled teenagers like myself who want to add something the process is: Having registered and logged inGo to near to the top right hand corner of the opening page and you will see a little figure. Click on that. Then click on “my profile”.Then click on my “blog post”, fill in the title and your wording and then click the post button.Andrew Harvey and Robin Whicker have already loaded a history and James Gurrey has updated his Bridge article. A number of other blogs have appeared so the site is growing as I speak. So please go back over the emails you sent in and add the information you submitted to the web site.
White Star Magazine
Robin has sent a complete bound set of the White Star magazine to Martin who is working on loading them on the web site. This is a major project as Martin has had to devise a way of scanning the pages without ruining the binding. His update to me a couple of days ago was:“I copied the first two issues but found that my somewhat higgledy piggledy set-up wasn’t quite up to the job (a stack of books and folders, files and stuff) so have made a bespoke stand to support the book against a white background through framed non-reflective glass. All good now except it is a constant readjustment as the bulk of the book shifts from one side to the other”.Stop press - As I get ready to send this out Martin has just let me know that Volume 1 (1951) is now on the website.
Where is all this going?I suggested a dinner or get together, possibly on Rolf Whicker’s birthday of 10 March. If you are interested please could you let me know? I would suggest a venue of either the Inn on the Lake (Godalming) or somewhere in London. Please let me know your preference.
Hillside Culinary delightsI am afraid I will have to whisper this month’s delight. Wednesday night for the older boys in my time involved a trip to the scullery to be presented with a thick slice of bread smothered in beef dripping. How did we let the thought police remove this delicacy from our menus? I am running out of memories here so need some help. Suggestions on Tapioca will however be ignored.
Pal’s cornerThe first month’s success has not been repeated so:David Hurford – David is still anxious to contact Martin Kendall.Jonathan Botting – Andrew Harvey has located an address in Bristol which I have written to.This is a regular feature for those looking for old friends
